Vacon is driven by a passion to develop, manufacture and sell the best AC drives and inverters in the world – and provide customers with efficient product lifecycle services. Vacon AC drives offer optimum process control and energy efficiency for electric motors. Vacon inverters play a key role when energy is produced from renewable sources.
Vacon was developing new drives product family for complex systems and challenging environments. Expected life cycle of installations is extensive, up to 30 years of continuous operation.
Understanding customer needs and requirements as well as Vacon internal expectations were crucial to guarantee the right focus for development work. The solution needs to be future proof, extensible, high quality and easy to maintain & service throughout its lifecycle.
Vacon selected Leadin to study and analyse internal and external expectations towards the new product family; and to concept, design and demonstrate the solutions that fulfil found expectations.
Group of stakeholders and customers were recognised. Leadin prepared and performed the interviews with them. Vacon customers were met on-site and they were interviewed while showing Leadin researchers how they utilise Vacon drives.
The views from Vacon stakeholders and customers were combined, analysed, grouped and reported. Six main topics were prioritised as key development targets. A set of personas was created to help Vacon continuously review customer expectations and take into account different user aspects.
Engaging customers into the product development builds trust and creates positive involvement for the company. Open and honest feedback is highly valuable when R&D roadmap is prioritised and focus is first put into the most important features.
With this project Vacon was able to combine internal ambitions and customer requests into the clear R&D targets. In design, the focus on high priority features helped to form the basis for whole wider system user experience. Utilisation of modern technologies in modular way provide basis for future proof, extensible software architecture.
